Swipes vs Disposable wipes

Using a gentle soft wipe is always kinder to your skin or baby's skin. I find that a disposable wipe will leave my skin or my Abbey's skin drier and in time begins to strip away the natural skin moisturizers.

With reusable wipes you can choose which additives to use and how much you would like to use. We use a couple of drops of our Fresh Essential Oils for make up-removal or for nappy changes.

Whats is in a disposable wipe?

After some research, it seems the companies are not as willing to provide all of the information to consumers, which is the same for disposable nappies. However they will typically contain some of the following ingredients:

Fragrance – made up of many chemicals which are toxic when inhaled or absorbed through skin.

Pthalates – used to make fragrance last longer and is considered to be a reproductive toxin.

Propylene Glycol & Butylene Glycol – Can cause brain, liver or kidney abnormalities, and is also found in many windshield wiper fluid.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate & Sodium Laureth Sulfate – SLS is linked to skin irritation, eye irritation, rashes and hair loss.

DMDM & Urea – is a preservative that releases formaldehyde which causes allergies, chest pain, fatigue, ear infections, immune dysfunction, asthma, heart palpitations, cancer and more.

Polyethylene Glycol – (PEG) –Petroleum ingredient that is carcinogenic and dehydrates your skin.

Parabens –They are strong hormone disruptors and have been directly linked to breast cancer and heart problems. Often listed as Methylparaben, Probylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben & Benezylparaben.

Here is a great Australia resource with a cheat sheet on which wipes are natural for babies and sensitive skin. Natural Baby Wipes are a good alternative to the chemical-laden disposable wipes, but they can also contain toxins.

There are now flush-able wipes available, which are marketed as being degradable. However it has been observed that they are clogging sewers.

With this information, its easy to see why reusable wipes are a safer, gentler and more environmental solution.
